A Wisconsin mayor has caused a massive controversy after calling Barack Obama a Muslim in a Facebook post.

From BPReview:

Superior, Wisconsin Mayor Bruce Hagen has become the subject of scrutiny after someone posted a picture of first lady Michelle Obama to his Facebook wall, WDIO reported.

Unbelievable! She and her Muslim partner have destroyed the fabric of democracy that was so very hard fought for! he wrote in response.

The comments caused an immediate backlash and five city councilors are among the chorus of those demanding the mayor retract his statement, according to WDIO.

Quite simply, these are really inappropriate comments, councilor Graham Garfield told WDIO on Monday. How can we have a non-partisan elected mayor who has to work with elected officials, including the presidents office, making these comments?

Im absolutely shocked and dumbfounded that the mayor would say something so callous and untrue about the First Lady, State Representative Nick Milroy added. This is not what Superior is about. Weve always been a community thats welcoming to all people.

As the local Fox affiliate reported, in the aftermath of Hagens comments, 5 city counselors Graham Garfield, Warren Bender, Esther Dalbec, Dan Olson and Denise McDonald have demanded the mayor apologize at once or resign as mayor.

Im not saying hes done anything criminal, but hes certainly put his leadership capabilities in question, said Graham Garfield, one of the City Council lynch mob. [Michelle Obama] and her Muslim partner have destroyed the fabric of democracy that was so very hard fought for, he wrote in one response to a friends comment. Another said Obama destroyed world relationships. Tell me how any of that is untrue.

When asked why he said Obama was a Muslim, he said that many Christians believe he is one and he is right. Im one of them.

But Mayor Hagen refuses to back down.

Do we still have freedom of speech in the country? Sometimes I kind of forget, Hagen asked Fox 21 rhetorically.

He added that he stands by his statement.
