Watch: Festive Canberra Christmas Light Display Sets Guinness World Record (VIDEOS)

Okay, even we Scrooges have to admit that its time to get into the spirit of the holiday season. The turkey and trimmings are almost gone, trees are being lit in almost every city and the shopping season has most certainly begun. Yikes!

This weekend, many will be putting up their Christmas decorations, including lights. But they will have to go a long way to outdo this shopping mall in Canberra, Australia. Petrie Plaza has always gone the extra bit with their decorations but this year they managed to take the actual record. That record had been held by Uzbekistan until now. Have a look!

There are nearly 1.2 million lights in the display, besting the Uzbekistan display by over 200,000 bulbs. The lights are strung on 75 miles of wire. It took months of planning and a huge team of volunteers to bring the display to life. Lawyer David Richards who won the Guinness record for most lights on a residential property last year oversaw the project.

Christmas lights really get people into the festive spirit… We decorated our home for years, and people came from everywhere to see our lights. This year, who knows how many people will come along? (source)

Working with Richards to bring his vision to light (pun intended) were architects, civil and sound engineers and construction companies. Richards knows what hes doing; he put up this Guinness World Record winning residential display last year:

Not only will this glorious display enchant and awe shoppers, it will raise funds for a local charity supporting families who have lost a child to sudden infant death.

We wish them all the Merriest of Christmases and Happiest of Holidays!
