If You Thought Normal Clowns Were Scary, Just Wait Until You See What This Artist Did With Them
If there”s one thing we can all agree on, it”s that clowns are terrifying. Sure, clowns started out as funny entertainers who were beloved by all. But somewhere in the last 30 years or so, they”ve shifted from undeniably funny to downright horrifying. I”m sure this shift has multiple causes, but most of the blame probably sits with Stephen King and his 1986 killer clown novel, It.
While King might have started the trend of terrifying clowns, French-born photographer Eolo Perfido has perfected it. His latest series Clownville features a cast of clowns straight from the depths of your worst nightmares.
Perfido says he drew inspiration for Clownville from the silent movie stars of the early 1900s, like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
“In silent films,” says Eolo, “the stars needed to overact to convey their characters” emotions.”
In a way, the characters in Clownville embody that ethos. Even though they say nothing, the pure emotion and pain the subjects are experiencing is clear in every photo.
For Perfido, clowns represent the universal need to entertain and be entertained.
They also serve as a guise to hide our own insecurities behind a mask of humor and happiness.
The subjects Perfido chose for Clownville ranged from professional actors to friends and family members.
To perfect each subject”s look, Perfido worked with makeup artist Valeria Orlando.
Each subject was given time in front of the camera to live out their demonic character.
The results speak for themselves.
Are you scared yet?
In Clownville, no one can hear you scream.
Perfido manages to pervert everything about childhood innocence.
Waiting…always waiting.
