Blues Fan Tweets About Discovering Hockey, Receives Free Tickets From the Team

A newly minted hockey fan got more than he bargained for after his tweets of the sport went viral.
Twitter user @soloucity, who also goes by Tony X., began tweeting about the sport during the seventh game of the St. Louis Blues first round playoff matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks Monday night. According to his feed, Tony was initially trying to find a broadcast of a St. Louis Cardinals game when he stumbled across the Stanley Cup Playoff matchup.

Initially, Tony claimed that his knowledge of hockey was limited to Disney’s early 90’s Mighty Ducks films. However as the game went on, and Tony X. became more engrossed in the action, he began to acclimate himself, eventually extolling the Blues to shutdown Chicago’s Patrick Kane, even if he wasn’t sure exactly who Kane was. Several tweets from @soloucity’s account were retweeted by influential accounts and soon went viral across “Hockey-Twitter,” the name of a subset of fans who tweet about the sport.

By game’s end, Tony had been retweeted thousands of times but only cared about the Blues victory, questioning their late game defense and eventually emphatically celebrating the team’s victory when the game ended. Tony X.’s viral story eventually reached the brass of the team, as the Blues by Tuesday afternoon offered Tony tickets to their next playoff home game.

The experience of watching the game combined with the Blues generosity seemed to turn Tony into a fan for life, as he expressed that the Blues organization had healed the broken heart that the departure of the St. Louis Rams had left him with.

The Blues eliminated the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks after failing to advance for three consecutive years. The team begins its second round series with the Dallas Stars in Dallas on April 29. The first game in St. Louis is scheduled for May 3.
