These Deep Blue Democrat States Might Elect Republican Governors Today

By  |

Most of todays election attention will be on the Senate races as the outcome could transfer power from Harry Reid and his ilk in the Democrat controlled Senate to Republicans. But another set of battles are being waged today that could have profound impact on several deep blue states going into 2016 and beyond. Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are all typically considered safe territory for liberal Democrats. This year, however, Democrats are struggling to create a meaningful lead going into election day. In fact, all five races are considered toss-ups.

Here are the poll averages.

CONNECTICUT:
Dannel Malloy (D) 42.3%
Tom Foley (R) 41%

ILLINOIS:
Pat Quinn (D) 45.6%
Bruce Rauner (R) 44.8%

MARYLAND:
Anthony Brown (D) 46%
Larry Hogan (R) 44%

MASSACHUSETTS:
Martha Coakley (D) 42%
Charlie Baker (R) 45.7%

RHODE ISLAND:
Gina Raimondo (D) 40%
Allan Fung (R) 36%

Most of these races slightly favor the Democrat. It says a lot, though, that Democrats have created such a terrible political climate that these races are so close.
